Many times we fail to appreciate the importance of self control, without it we can find ourselves prone to excess and waste.  But most importantly we become easy victims of our own impulsive carnal desires.  Self control comes from an inability to take authority over one's self and desires and it's hard to be productive or live a meaningful or fruitful life without it.
