Mother's Day Gift of $1 Lotto Ticket Turns Into $1.3 Million Winner

Powerball Jackpot Expected To Reach A Whopping Record-Breaking 1.5 Billion Dollars

A woman in North Carolina who received a $1 lottery ticket for Mother's Day has received quite the gift after the ticket turned out to be a winner worth $1.3 million.

"I just can’t believe it," said Vielka Roman of Autryville. "I’m still in shock."

Last week on Mother's Day, Roman, her fiancè, Al, and her sister Neris, went out for a meal to celebrate. After dinner, they stopped off at a convienence store in Fayetteville.

“Carolina Cash 5 is her favorite game,” said Neris. “So I bought her the lucky ticket as a Mother’s Day present.”

The next day, Roman and her fiancè were heading to the mountains when she asked Al to check and see if they had won anything off the $1 ticket.

"I was looking at the app on the phone and I saw confetti burst," said Al. "I had to check the numbers five times to make sure they were real."

Their vacation to the mountains was cancelled as they turned right around and headed for Raleigh to claim their prize - but not before stopping to pick up her sister, Neris.

“I think everyone would like to have a sister like her,” said Neris. “She has always been there for me. And when she won she said to me, ‘If I win, then you also win.’”

Sunday's Carolina Cash 5 jackpot was the third largest in the game's history, according to a press release about the win. After taxes, Roman took over a little over $950,000 - quite a nice Mother's Day gift.

The lucky winner says she plans to use the winnings to pay off her mortgage and car as well as help out her sister.

"We just moved here, just bought a house," said Roman. "It will be nice to have room to breathe. Neris can have more time to plant in her garden. We will be able to spend more time with each other as a family."
